Meconium aspiration pneumonia in Murrah buffalo calves

Meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS) is caused due to respiratory distress the fetus during or before parturition. As a result of asphyxia, fetal gasping causes meconic amniotic fluid entry into air passages and pulmonary complications, sometimes death newborn. In present study, two cases MAS in murrah buffalo calves born full term by assisted delivery died after few hours were received for routine postmortem examination. Necropsy examination revealed diffuse mosaic-pattern - like lesions lungs characterized dark brown-to-red deflated (atelectatic) lobes small irregular pale raised multi focal partially inflated tiny areas amidst atelectatic lobes. Microscopically, bronchoalveloar lumen contained keratin, squames subtle meconium along mild infiltration neutrophils alveolar parenchyma. study was similar presentation that reported human babies MAS.
